Motivational Monday: There's More Than One Reason To Exercise

I recently took an exercise hiatus, purely because now I'm back at University, I can do whatever I want. I'm the epitome of lazy and I have to really push myself to get off my bum and workout. I have, however, started back on the Blogilate fitness calendar and after today's workout I got to thinking.

When I started to workout regularly, my aim was to lose weight. I had about 3 stone to lose and the best way is regular exercise and healthy eating. Today after my extremely hard butt/leg workout I realised that my reason for exercising has changed. Yes I still want to lose those few extra pounds that make my tummy wobbly, but my main reason is to get stronger. This time last year I could barely do 10 pushups on my knees, now, after regular pilates, I can do a grand total of 5 normal pushups! This might not sound impressive, but for me this is a very big achievement.

I notice my body getting stronger every time I work out, I can manage a few more squats, run a bit faster or do a few extra push ups. To me, this is the ultimate motivation to keep going, I want to see just how strong my body can be. I think it's very important to keep in mind all the other amazing benefits working out can have on the mind and body. Focusing on what those scales are doing, or what dress you can or can't fit into, won't continuously give you the motivation to keep going.

If losing weight is your reason for exercising, there's nothing wrong with that. But if you start to feel frustrated or constantly let down because you don't see the changes you want to see, focus on what HAS changed. Are you sleeping better? Is your mood lifted? Does your skin look brighter? Can you do more squats than before? I found this handy little pic on Pinterest and it perfectly highlights all the other fantastic reasons to get off your bum and get a sweat on. Look at how many health benefits there are that you might not actually be able to see, but will be good for you in the long run!

I hope this little post has given you a new outlook, maybe something new to focus on, a new target perhaps. Just remember it's not all about the numbers!

Why do you exercise? Do you feel better when you exercise regularly, or does it make no difference either way?
