Let me start by saying that I've been colouring my hair since I was 14, that's a grand total of 8 years! Of course I don't have 8 years of colour build up, having chopped all my hair off a good few times. But I have been colouring my hair red for the last few years, and that alone has caused some more permanent damage that no colour remover can help with.
With summer creeping up on us, I decided I wanted to go back to my naturally mousey brown colour. I knew it wouldn't be easy or even possible, but I decided I wanted to get as close as I could. I always see the Colour B4 boxes sitting quietly on the shelf, next to all the tempting, vibrant hair colourant boxes. I was also suspicious of it; I wasn't sure if it would really work and so stayed away. However desperate times and all. I did a lot of research beforehand to see what results other people had had. I was pleasantly surprised! It looked as though this stuff was actually a dark horse, overlooked but actually worth a try.
And so I toddled off to Superdrug to purchase myself a box of the extra strength version (as well as a box of brown dye just in case of any mishaps, one must be prepared). Safe to say I did not need the back up dye.
You have to leave this stuff on for 60mins, which is an extremely long time when you have nothing else to do! I watched in anticipation as my hair got lighter and lighter over the next hour.
Finally I washed it off, following the instructions exactly (there's a lot of steps to follow) and so here's the final result...
Yes it is ginger. I was under no illusions that I would most likely go ginger. Red dye is notoriously hard to remove as it stains the hair, so I knew what I was getting myself in for. The key thing you have to realise before using this, is that it removes dark tones and colour buil-dup. It definitely did both of those things for me; my hair is much lighter and a lot less red!
You can dye your hair straight after using this if you wish; I thought I'd give it a miss because the red would inevitably sneak through again. Even though this contains no bleach or ammonia, this dries your hair out. But with the use of a trusty hair mask, you can get your hair back to its silky soft self in no time. I'd recommend the Charles Worthington Melting Balm for this, works like a treat.
The only real downside of this product is the smell. It smells sooooo bad, like bad eggs to be precise. It took A LOT of washes to get the smell to go away, it wasn't very prominent when my hair was dry, but if it was wet or I was sweating you could smell it.
If you have naturally light hair and have dyed it disastrously dark, then this stuff is for you. If you have red hair and you no longer want red hair, this will help, but it won't be the solution. You have to accept that red is a tad more permanent than any other colour. You have to embrace the ginger inside and conjure up a lot of patience if you want to be permanently rid of red dye. I was really impressed with this and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a rewind.

Have you tried Colour B4? What did you think?
I really wish they sold this stuff in the states. The only one I can ever find is the L'Oreal one and that one is terrible. It's basically bleach and makes your hair look dead after use unlike yours. Your hair looked so healthy after color removal!
ReplyDeleteI was going to try this but ended up letting my hair grow out naturally. Glad I didn't now you've mentioned about the smell!

I've tried this before, it worked getting red out of my hair but not when I tried to get black dye out of it! :(
